Cascara Sagrada Bark has been historically used as a aperient, a laxative which worked gently and without griping or irritation to produce easier evacuation and normal stool function, large intestines, which gives it its importance in the lower bowel, and constipation, used in small doses over a long period of time. Even if an immediate effect does not take place, eventually the Cascara will tone and strengthen the bowel and effect normal function. Therefore, if you are looking for a strong, one- time laxative, choose Turkey rhubarb or some other cathartic, instead of Cascara Sagrada.
