Herbal Supplements and Menopause
Menopause is the period of a woman’s life when menstruation ends, and she is no longer able to reproduce. Considered a normal part of aging, these changes usually occur between the ages of 45-50. Though in some cases a woman can experience what is known as premature menopause, due to things such as, hysterectomy or damage to the ovaries. Menopause does not occur over night but over several months or years. In the time leading up to menopause one may experience changes both physical and emotional. Hard to miss, these can most commonly include: Hot flashes, irregular periods, sleeping problems, mood swings (anxiety, depression, irritability, loss of libido), weight gain, joint and muscle pain, and fatigue.
While it is possible for a woman to menstruate regularly up until her last period, it is unlikely; typically you’ll experience some irregularity. A period may occur every two to four months and regardless of irregularity, pregnancy can occur. Most women go through menopause without any complications while others find it an uncomfortable experience with symptoms lasting for extended periods of time. The medical society has developed helpful prescription drugs to help ease unpleasant symptoms but there are highly effective natural approaches most women use as well such as:
a. Nutritional stability and exercise to maintain health during these changes.
b. Herbal remedies that work to adapt your hormones and help estrogen and progesterone ratios.
c. Reducing stress and understanding that emotions play a vital role in our health.
If you are approaching menopause and are not yet exercising regularly now is the time to start. Not only does regular physical activity keep your body happy and free of excessive weight gain, but it helps ease feelings of anxiety and stress one may experience during this time. A minimum of 2.5 hours of moderate physical activity, 2 days a week is recommended.
Herbal remedies have been explored for many years and among the most effect treatments are Black Cohosh, Ginkgo Biloba, Ginseng and Dong Quai. These treatments can be found in many forms such as tea and supplements. These remedies may be effective to help ease symptoms, but it is important to make sure your doctor knows about all of the supplements you are taking.
Whether you’re approaching menopause or discover you are experiencing symptoms, take the time to explore natural treatments that you feel are right for you. With a little patience and time you will be on your way to nearly symptom free menopausal wellness!
